Yes, 2-time qualifier I believe.


May have only competed once and did not place. Single elimination then and only the top 4 were recognized as AA.

Did place 3rd at the AAU National Tournament in 1952 as a HS student. His sole loss was to Jack Blubaugh (former OK St All-American competing for the Armed Forces team who went on to make the US Olympic team that year and later was a Pan American Games Champion). Dad beat Harvard's Johnny Lee in that tournament. Lee had placed 4th at NCAA's the week before the tourney.

I get the feeling that the coaching at VT back then didn't quite measure up to what he got in HS with Coach Martin (but those were tough shoes to fill for anyone).
